This particular Macbook looked nearly new. No cracks, chips, discoloration and hardly any scuffs or scratches in the polycarbonate case. In my opinion, this is one of the best bang-for-the-buck MacBook's out there. There are tons of them under $100 and with another $100 in upgrades, you can have a machine capable of performing any modern day task including YouTube and Photoshop image processing. Using the Macbook with Yosemite was an alright experience. It performed about as you'd expect for a 9 year old Macbook. The most notable area needing improvement being startup time. I clocked it at just over one minute (60 seconds) to boot from chime to login.

I hadn't initially planned to do anything with the Macbook but since it was in such good shape and since it seemed perfectly usable even in today's world, I decided I ought to upgrade it a bit. In my experience, the most improvement in performance is gained from an SSD upgrade with additional memory being second.

If you have a limited budget, install the SSD. If your budget is a bit more, track down more RAM and do both. The first item on my upgrade list is to install more memory. This is first mostly because I already had the memory modules in my Dell Studio and decided to snag them for this effort. I'd read, via several internet sites, that the A1181 could use 4GB with some later models reporting 6GB. Both of these being PC2-5300 (667mhz) memory, 200 pin SODIMM's.Īs noted above, I had a couple of sticks of Hynix PC2-6400S memory and decided to give those a try. Since I had them, there was nothing to lose. Memory installation is simple, remove the battery, three P1 screws, and then use the little levers to remove the ram. I installed both 4GB sticks, one in each slot, for a total of 8GB. The Macbook powered on, chimed and booted to OSX without issue.
Once in the system report showed 8GB, one module in each slot, just as I installed: Unique to the MacBook include a redesigned "flush against the bed" keyboard that does not touch the screen, a "no moving parts" magnetic latch that "catches without a catch", and a case design that makes upgrading the RAM and hard drive easy.So an early 2009 A1181 can take 8GB of PC2-6400S memory.
They also have the same "scrolling TrackPad", a built-in iSight video camera, an Apple Remote for use with Apple Front Row software, and the clever "MagSafe" power connector.
